Chin plastic surgery - (Mentoplasty)

What is chin surgery?

Chin cosmetic surgery Chin surgery also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reshapes a patients chin, for cosmetic reasons. Through mentoplasty people who are not satisfied with the shape of their chin are able to achieve facial balance and harmony which contributes toward a more attractive profile. Reshaping of the chin can enhance the profile just as much as a nose correction procedure, for this reason it is not uncommon for cosmetic surgeons to combine mentoplasty with nose reshaping surgery for aesthetically enhanced results.

There are three types of chin plastic surgery performed:

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate for chin plastic surgery is emotionally and physically healthy, well-informed and has realistic expectations. To be an eligible candidate, one must be over 18 years old. It is necessary to consult with one of our plastic surgeons personally and discuss the procedure in details prior to making a final decision to undergo your mentoplasty procedure. Our board certified plastic surgeons can address all your concerns and present you with your options.

Before your mentoplasty

Before having a chin plastic surgery you will be required to undergo some tests, you can have your pre-examination either at home and send us the results or you can have the tests at our plastic surgery clinic; whichever is most convenient for you. Such tests determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a chin surgery. Whether you are considering mentoplasty for functional or for cosmetic reasons, you will have to consult personally with our plastic surgeon who will thoroughly examine your chin and jaw before discussing your concerns and options.

Before undergoing a chin surgery there are some considerations that must be taken into account:

  • must be in sound mental and physical health
  • candidates must have realistic expectations
  • must be at least 18 years of age

Please note: we ask you to stop smoking, avoid taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs at least 2 weeks before your surgery.

The chin surgery procedure

If you are considering having chin surgery, it is important to understand how the surgery is performed. Chin surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of the surgery is between one and two hours depending on the type of procedure.

The surgeon first makes an incision inside the mouth, so there will be no visible scarring on the face. With a chin reduction surgery, the incision can be made either in the mouth or under the chin. If the patient has a double chin, liposuction might be required at the same time, in such a situation the incision is made under the chin, after which the surgeon reshapes the bone to a more aesthetical size. In the next step, the surgeon creates a space where a gortex or silicone implant is carefully inserted in front of the mandible. These materials feel like natural tissue and are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Lastly, the surgeon closes the incision by using fine sutures. On completion of the operation the patient is required to stay one night in the clinic.

Recovery after mentoplasty

After a mentoplasty surgery your surgeon will instruct you in regards to post-care. Following his instructions for post-surgery care, is an important key to the success of your surgery. Your surgeon will apply a dressing that will remain in place for the next few days. Liquid and very soft food is recommended for approximately 3 days, after a chin surgery chewing will be limited. You may feel a stretched, tight sensation during the first week. The surgeon will prescribe medication for any post-surgical discomfort or pain. The result of mentoplasty is a greater facial harmony and self-confidence.
