Cosmetic eyelid surgery - (blepharoplasty)
According to a recent study people assess your age and vitality from the appearance of your eyes. As we age not only does our skin lose its elasticity giving way to wrinkles, but the accumulation of fatty tissue and excess skin forms in the eye region causing bags and drooping eyelids. Whilst this may well be considered as part of the ageing process and either ignored or accepted as normal, it can now be corrected with a simple surgical procedure known as blepharoplasty – eyelid plastic surgery.
Blepharoplasty, though commonly performed for aesthetic purposes, is sometimes performed for correcting a medical condition known as drooping eyelid (ptosis) which blocks vision. Ptosis is often caused by nerve damage or insufficient muscle tone.
Blepharoplasty is the perfect solution for correcting puffy eyes and drooping eyelids, it is often performed with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as:
- forehead lift and brow lift
- crows feet
- facial sagging
The benefits of cosmetic eyelid surgery
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a popular procedure that removes excess skin, muscle, and fat from the lower and upper eyelid region, eliminating drooping eyelashes and sinking upper eyelids. Eyelid surgery restores puffy and baggy eyelids from a tired worn out look to that of a younger, fresher looking appearance.
As with other forms of cosmetic surgery, successful blepharoplasty can result in an increase in confidence and self-esteem, one of the main ingredients for a happy social-life and successful career.
It is difficult to believe that having this minor surgical procedure can make such a tremendous impact on ones outlook on life and success.

The blepharoplasty procedure
Using local anaesthesia and state of the art technology, the blepharoplasty procedure can be performed as a one day procedure. Prior making a slight incision, the surgeon accurately marks the incision lines for the eyelid surgery. The excess fat is then removed and the incisions are sealed using very fine sutures. Approximately 5 days after the operation the sutures are removed.
After the cosmetic eyelid surgery
After cosmetic eyelid surgery your surgeon will instruct you in regards to post-care. It is likely he will prescribe medicine that will aid the healing process. It is typical for the eyes to be lubricated and bandaged immediately after the procedure and for antibiotics to be prescribed to help prevent infection; your surgeon may also prescribe a mild painkiller if you experience discomfort or pain.
The eyelid cosmetic surgeon's instruction for post-care may be:
- use of prescribed medicines
- how to use cold compresses
- to keep the head elevated for the first night
- the correct way to clean your eyes
- refrain from strenuous activities
- use of lubricating eye drops
- no make-up during the healing process
- no alcohol consumption
- no watching tv or computer
- no wearing contact lenses
- refrain from crying
Sutures are removed about 5 days after the operation while bruised and swollen eyelids continue to heal over the subsequent days. It may be recommended to wear sunglasses for several weeks after the operation.
Though normal activities can resume after around 10 days, strenuous activities must be avoided for about three weeks.
Am I eligible for eyelid surgery?
One of our plastic surgeons will consult with you prior making any final decisions regarding your eyelid surgical procedure.
The ideal candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery is emotionally and physically healthy, well-informed, with realistic expectations. To be an eligible candidate, one must be over 18 years old. Typically people over the age of 35 choose to have blepharoplasty. However, eyelid surgery may be considered by those of a younger age who choose the procedure due to inherited factors.
Some people may not be eligible for eyelid surgery due to existing ophthalmic conditions: glaucoma, dry eyes, or detached retina. Other prohibitive medical conditions include, but are not limited to: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Graves' disease, hypothyroidism, or high blood pressure.
Unsuitable orbital anatomy or insufficient supportive structure may also render some people ineligible for cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Potential risks of eyelid surgery
There is always an element of risk in any given operation and even the most experienced of blepharoplasty surgeons will have patients who experience unpredictable complications.
Potential risks include but are not limited to eye infections, swelling and tightness at the corners of the eyelids, excessive bleeding, suture cysts, delayed healing, as well as scaring and asymmetrical healing. In very rare cases, there may be ectropion – outward-turning eyelids and other more serious complications. We strongly recommend that you discuss these risks and share any concerns you may have when you meet your surgeon at the initial consultation.
Despite the risks, cosmetic eyelid surgery is relatively safe when compared to other invasive plastic surgical operations. The majority of patients who undergo blepharoplasty are pleased with the results.
