Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUT)
Follicular Unit Transplantation is a technique that is used when the need for donor grafts is high, and is recommended if the patient has a long hairstyle. The procedure involves a thin (1-1.5 cm) strip of scalp tissue removed from ear to ear. The follicular grafts are then transplanted from this strip into the recipient area. Transplantation in follicular units allows the transplanted hair to appear completely natural after surgery, and with the FUT technique, our doctors are able to transplant larger amounts of hair than with the Follicular Unit Extraction method.
Unlike Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Follicular Unit Transplantation does leave a thin scar (1-2 mm) at the donor area, and that is why this method is usually recommended for patients with a long hairstyle. To find out whether you are an ideal candidate for Follicular Unit Transplantation, please , and ask for a consult with one of our doctors.
The Procedure
Follicular Unit Transplant is performed under local anaesthesia. The first step of the operation is to remove a 1-1.5 cm lateral strip from the scalp tissue. Next, the patient has to lie on his or her back, until the wound is able to fully close. This way, the post-operation scar is minimized, and only a 1-2 mm thin line will be visible after surgery.
The next step is to cut the donor tissue up into follicular units, and get them ready for transplantation. At our clinic, the tissue is carefully split into naturally occurring groups of 1-4 hairs, called follicular units. This way, the end-result will be as natural as possible, and the transplant area will show no apparent sign of surgery at all. These follicular units are then transplanted into the recipient area with the help of special microscopes, with only wounds of minimal size in the scalp.
Recovery
Owing to the proficiency of our doctors, there will be only microscopic wounds from the implantation; the healing process in the recipient area consists of only a few days. After recovery, the result will be indistinguishable from natural hair. The wound in the donor area will take a little more to heal, however, the scar that remains after surgery will also be minimal.
