Ptosis surgery
Droopy eyelids, or ptosis, can often be seen among the elderly people as it usually comes with old age. The levator muscles, which raise, lower, and hold the upper eyelids in place can stretch or lose elasticity, or they are simply not able to hold the weight of the eyelid anymore. This causes a typical droopy or sleepy appearance of the eyes, which many people find uncomfortable. Besides the cosmetic reasons of getting rid of the drooping appearance of the eyelids, ptosis can cause blocked vision, and also strain and fatigue in the eyes, especially during reading or working on the computer. Droopy eyelids may also be a genetically inherited feature.
The Procedure
Ptosis surgery is performed under local anaesthesia by one of our highly proficient surgeons who has much experience in this kind of operation. During the surgery, he removes the excess skin, fat and muscles, which are the cause of droopy eyelids. After this, stitches are applied to close the incisions. If he sees that it is necessary, the surgeon may use a laser device to remove fatty tissues from the lower eyelids. This laser technology makes the wound much easier to heal, and minimizes the amount of bruising after the surgery.
The Healing Period
Right after the ptosis surgery, the doctor may advise bandaging and cold compression treatment. Furthermore, it is advisable to rest as much as possible and keep the head elevated at all times. You may experience some bruising and swelling after the surgery. Stitches will be removed in 3 days after the procedure, and you can expect to go back to work within a week, however, you should avoid all strenuous activities. You are also advised to avoid alcohol during the healing period. After 3 months, the last signs of the ptosis surgery will completely disappear, and what remain are your healthier and better looking eyes.
