The weakened area of the tooth is removed by using tiny drills, and then dentist washes out the hole before placing the filling. There are several types of filling materials. The most common is the strong amalgam and the aesthetic white composite tooth fillings. Here you can read more about their advantages and disadvantages.
Amalgam filling
The Amalgam filling is not an aesthetic solution, but lasts for a long period of time and it’s very cheap. Amalgam mixture (silver, copper, mercury, zinc) is usually having chosen at back teeth fillings. This type of filling material is very strong, last for almost 10 years and can be completed in one visit. There are many disadvantages of amalgam fillings as well like it does not match in colour with the natural teeth. It is necessary to make big place with the drill, which can hold the filling and this seriously damages the healthy part of the teeth structure. Amalgam filling also can corrode after a period of time.
Aesthetic white composite resin filling
The aesthetic white composite resin filling (sometimes called as porcelain dental filling): the original shape and colour of the teeth can be reproduced. The outcome of white composite fillings is more natural look of the teeth and smile. These dental fillings are also strong and will be less sensitive, do not contain mercury, which can cause by some people allergic reaction, like at amalgam fillings. Another main advantage of white composite fillings is that it does not need to make big holes in the healthy tooth. It protects patient’s original tooth structure. Tooth coloured composite fillings were used only in front teeth several years ago.
