PRK eye surgery
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), or excimer laser eye surgery, was invented in 1988. It was the most common vision correction intervention for quite a long period of time. PRK was the first step in the field of corrective laser eye surgery. It is a completely safe procedure, which uses excimer laser directly on the surface of the cornea. The vision correction by laser lasts for a lifetime, the outcome is outstanding.
The one disadvantage of the PRK surgery is that it causes discomfort and can even be painful in the first few days after the treatment. The recovery period takes a few weeks. shortsighted and farsighted patients can both benefit from PRK.

How is the PRK surgery performed?
The examination before the operation takes approximately 1 1/2 hours and it is totally painless. Your laser eye surgeon will examine your eyes to determine which vision correction intervention you will need. In addition, you will get detailed information about the outcome of the surgery.
During the surgery, most patients do not feel any pain; the whole intervention takes about 10 minutes. The procedure is ambulatory, done under local anesthesia. You will get special drops for your eyes. A computer will be used by the surgeon to adjust the laser which can be turned off at any time. The surgeon will make sure that the laser is adjusted to the perfect position, and then the tissue will be removed from your cornea.
Recovering from the surgery
You can leave the clinic right after the operation, but you should not drive home, someone will have to give you a lift. Like in the case of all types of surgeries, it is very important to follow the given instructions after the operation. You should lie down for couple of hours after going home.
During the first 2 postoperative days, rest as much as possible. On the 3rd day after the intervention, you will have to return to the clinic for a couple of minutes of checkup. You can return to work after 4-8 days.
