What is liposuction?
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is the process by which excess fat deposits are surgically removed using a cannula and body contours reshaped, resulting in a slimmer body and increased self-confidence for the patient.
The first liposuction surgery was performed in 1974 and was a major advancement in body contouring techniques. Liposuction procedures soon became very popular and are now performed world-wide.
It must be remembered that liposuction does not substitute a healthy diet and exercise and can not solve a patients’ cellulite problem. It’s also important to know that an internationally accepted standard states that no more than three liters of fat can be removed in any given procedure.

The ideal candidate for liposuction surgery is emotionally and physically healthy, well-informed, with realistic expectations. To be an eligible candidate, one must be over 18 years of age. The outcome of a liposuction procedure will depend on a couple of individual factors, such as age, skin elasticity, muscle tone, weight, and overall health. Preparing for liposuction
There are some considerations that must be taken into account before opting for liposuction surgery:
- must be in sound mental and physical health
- candidates must have realistic expectations
- must be at least 18 years of age
Some tests will also need to be performed so as to determine whether you are a suitable liposuction surgery candidate.
We ask you to stop smoking, avoid taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs at least 2 weeks before your liposuction.
Duration and how is performed
The duration of the surgery is between one and two hours, depending on the location from where the excess fat is removed. Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes small, inconspicuous incisions through which he inserts a cannula attached to a special vacuum, using a back and forth motion the surgeon uses the cannula to remove the excess fat from the body.

After the liposuction surgery your plastic surgeon will instruct you in regards to post-care. Following his instructions carefully is an important key to the healing process and the overall success of your surgery.
